There are no Emberville reviews yet; Early Access starts January 7, 2027. Hands-on previews of the Prologue were mostly positive about the pixel art, voice acting, switchable classes and mastery system, and critical of weapon swapping and controller support. Press Press Press
Preview roundup
All five played the Prologue in September 2026, before the public demo and before the delay; the sessions they describe run from about one to three hours. Builds given to press ahead of Next Fest were the invite-only Creator & Press Preview. Dev
| Outlet | Liked | Criticized | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| TV Pulse Magazine | Cozy pixel look over a deeper RPG; procedural dungeons; switchable classes; crafting and masteries; voice cast. Called it ambitious for a debut studio. | Little; flagged that class switching could still change in development. Found the first boss surprisingly hard. | Press |
| Gamer Social Club | Atmosphere, music and nostalgia; weapon perks that make each combination feel like a build. | No hotbar or quick weapon swap; no controller support in that build; cursor aiming takes getting used to. “More curious than convinced.” | Press |
| Tails by the Foxfire | Story, characters and worldbuilding; intuitive combo combat; forgiving deaths; ran well on PC. Scored 4/5. | No controller support yet; a gear-loss bug; some voiced lines differ from subtitles; music was the weakest part. | Press |
| WayTooManyGames | “Diablo-lite” loot, deep class trees up to level 40, attribute builds; ran smoothly. | Controller couldn’t reach some inventory areas; no quick weapon swapping. The life-sim side wasn’t in the preview. | Press |
| CGMagazine | Deliberate, telegraphed combat with free-direction dodging; the memory-fading death mechanic. | Mostly descriptive; no verdict. | Press |
Where the previews agree
- Presentation: the pixel art and the large, well-known voice cast make a strong first impression. Press Press
- Progression: freely swappable classes and use-based masteries are the most-praised systems. Press Press
- Friction: weapon swapping and controller support were the most common complaints. Press Press Press
Some of this has moved since: demo patch 0.20.18 fixed several controller menu bugs, and the developers delayed Early Access partly to rework bow combat after the public demo. Dev See updates.
How the public demo landed
The free demo drew enough discussion to change the launch: the developers cited Next Fest feedback when they delayed Early Access. Dev Price was the loudest debate — a “Price too high” thread passed 100 replies, and the studio’s director answered it directly. Dev Steam does not show user reviews for an unreleased game, so there is no review score yet. Official
Watch official gameplay
- The Official Trailer and the Release Date Trailer play at the top of the Steam store page. Official
- Or play it: the free demo is the same Prologue the previews covered. Official
Is it worth it?
Too early to say. What we know: $29.99, the developers’ estimate of 15–20 hours for an average Early Access player, and one of nine planned biomes at launch. Dev We’ll add a review summary here once Early Access reviews exist.
