Microtransactions, DLC and subscriptions

The official FAQ answers this bluntly: “No microtransactions, battle passes, or subscription fees. EVER!” The team’s stated goal is to expand Emberville through regular updates beyond 1.0 without paid DLCs. Dev

Why $29.99? The developer’s answer

In a Steam thread titled “Price too high,” CEO and game director Brynjar “Cygnus” Gigja posted the answer the developers marked as accepted: the team set $29.99 because they believe it is fair for the game they are building, it is a single purchase with no microtransactions, and playtime should keep growing with updates. He also acknowledged that some players will prefer to wait for more content, for 1.0 or for a discount. Dev

How much game do you get?

The developers’ own Early Access estimates: Dev

Play styleEstimated hours
Rushing the story7–10 hours
Average player15–20 hours
Invested player20–30+ hours
Prologue / demo onlyAbout 90 minutes on average

Early Access covers the first of nine planned biomes, so these numbers describe a fraction of the planned game. If you are unsure, the free demo is the same Prologue that opens the paid game, and your save carries over.
